Free Comic Book Day

Have you ever heard of Free Comic Book Day? Because that's (kind of) what we did this weekend.

What Free Comic Book Day is when a bunch of stores around the comic shop open up and hand out free comics. This brings flocks of nerds out to see the various shops that they may or may not have been before (last year I found a shop that sold an old game I had been looking for for many years and I didn't even know they existed).

This year, though, we didn't walk that much, but work at a table instead. Our old high school was trying to recruit new students and, because of other things happening, many people couldn't show up to help. So it was only Andrew, this quiet girl named Catherine, a young kid around the age of 9 or 10 (I didn't know his name), and me. I actually found it interesting working at this table instead of walking because I was able to talk to many types of people. There were knights in shining armor, a beautiful Ivy from Batman (with an amazing tattoo), Quailman, and more.

When you're just walking around, you don't see many of the people walking around, but when you're working at a table, you can stare at them and admire their costumes from a distance. You can interact with these people and see how their lives are. I mean, most of the time you're talking about the school, but other times you can see their interests and life. One man had just moved here and was starting his life as an artist (something Andrew and I can relate to), another was a woman who ran a comic and gave us a card, the people next to us were dressed in amazing steampunk and talked like Andrew's brother. There was even this one man who tried to tell Andrew that he had "seen that dagger before" (the one Andrew made himself) and then proceed to brag about all his other knives. I thought that was funny.

Free Comic Book Day is a festival of nerds and geeks. People dress as their favorite superheros and find a community where they can belong and talk with one another. We are not that specific kind of nerd, but hey, the Renaissance Fair is next weekend.
